Personally, I find thumnails obnoxious. If you've already managed to get the visitor to your page, why do you want to make them point and click, over and over again? Just put the photos ON the page, so they can scroll through them. It's a more pleasant browsing experience. Particularly, if your visitor happens to be on dial-up.
